Elements of Magic

INTRODUCTORY COURSE

IN THE RECLAIMING TRADITION

NOVEMBER 16-18, 2012

Magic: the art of changing our consciousness at will. Using Magic, we open ourselves to our inner wisdom, our many senses, our subtle powers, our ability to work with the natural energies around us, and to an awareness of the immanence of divinity in ourselves and our world.  As we awaken these resources and practice their use, we make ourselves whole and we create the world we want.

Elements of Magic is an experiential course in which we work with the Elements of Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Spirit to gain basic tools for doing Magic.

Students will learn and refine techniques such as creating magical space, spellcraft, chanting, trance, energy work, and structuring rituals. The concept of the triple self and its importance in magic will be introduced.

The Elements of Magic course can enrich practice in any spiritual tradition.  It is based in the Reclaiming tradition of the Craft.  Reclaiming brings together the spirit of the Goddess, the immanent life force, with personal growth and action for social and environmental betterment.  Since Reclaiming rituals call on all present to participate actively as creators of group magic, we ask that anyone desiring to join our Central-NC Reclaiming group, Dragon’s Cauldron, first complete the Elements of Magic course.

About the Teachers:

Wren:
Wren is a skeptical, rational scientist who, to her surprise, rediscovered her magical side in the late 1990’s, and happily found a spiritual home in the Reclaiming tradition. She has co-taught several Elements of Magic classes and other Reclaiming courses; attended many  witchcamps, courses and workshops in the Craft; is active in our local Dragon’s Cauldron; and continues study, daily practice and teaching based on Reclaiming and Anderson Feri traditions.

A grandmother, botanist, singer, logophile, and member of an intentional community, Wren likes to walk in woods, meander in meadows and slog in bogs; create places where Mystery can enter on her land and in her home; and do magic with fellow Witches.

Isar:
Isar has been a witch since 1991 and a member of the Reclaiming tradition since 1994.  Her Craft has often expressed itself in cooperation with nature, such as creating magical garden spaces and building a labyrinth.  As a proud Crone, she revels in the ripeness of this deeply fruitful era of life.

Isar is a member of the Dragon’s Cauldron and has taught both at Spiralheart and locally. She is a dedicated priestess of Danu.  She loves choral singing, dancing, absurdist humor, reading, and doing beadwork.  Her cat Sadie graciously allows Isar to share their magical cottage amongst the Carolina pines.

Elements Class Forming for January 2012

Elements Of Magic
Introductory Course in the Reclaiming Tradition
January 14-16, 2012

It’s elemental . . . with the art of magic, we deepen our vision and focus our will, empowering ourselves to act in the world. In this class we develop the practice of Magic, Witchcraft, and Goddess spirituality by working with the Elements of Magic: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit in the tradition of Starhawk and the Reclaiming Collective.

Witchcraft is a growing tradition in our culture today. It is a call from and to the ancient Goddess and Her immanence. It is a call to know ourselves in all of our parts, so that we can create the powerful magic that changes all worlds. While we live in a culture of domination and control, worlds full of desire, beauty, love and grace surround us and the Craft opens them to us.

Students will learn and refine techniques such as creating magical space, spellcraft, chanting, trance, energy work, and structuring rituals in an experiential format. The concept of the triple self and its importance in magic will be introduced. Once aligned, we will open all of our selves to the beauty and love around us, creating rituals and practices that can transform us and the world about us.

Recommended preparation: Read the first seven chapters of The Spiral Dance or all of the Elements path in The Twelve Wild Swans by Starhawk.

When: Friday, January 13, 2012 from 6 – 9 pm; Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 10 am – 9 pm; and Sunday, January 15, 2012 from 10 am – 4 pm.

Where: Private home in a rural setting north of Durham, in Rougemont. Some local housing may be available upon request.

How to Register: Complete and submit your interest in the course via Birch’s Instructor Contact Form, include your name, email and and information on any prior magical experience you may have (not required to take the course).

Cost: $40 – $100 sliding scale, you decide where you slide. Includes $20 deposit upon registering; payment may be sent via PayPal: contact Birch to make deposit arrangements.

About the Teachers:

Wren is a hard-nosed rational scientist who rediscovered and reclaimed her magical side in 1999, and happily found a spiritual home in the Reclaiming tradition. She has co-taught several Elements of Magic classes and other Reclaiming courses; attended many witchcamps, courses and workshops in the Craft; is active in our local Dragon’s Cauldron; and continues study, daily practice and teaching based on Reclaiming and Anderson Feri traditions.

A grandmother, botanist, singer, logophile, and member of an intentional community, Wren likes to commune with the green realm and the beings of the forest, create places where Mystery can enter on her land and in her home, and do magic with fellow Witches.

Birch is a queer witch who has been teaching/priesting in the Reclaiming tradition for over nine years and recently completed his Reclaiming Initiation. He has taught at Reclaiming witchcamps up and down the east coast, and other Reclaiming classes throughout the southeast and at his home in North Carolina. His current work focuses on using magical principles as a way of developing community and community leaders, the healing power available to humans in the natural realms, and opening to the divine.

Birch relishes his hermit side and practices shamatha-vipashyana meditation regularly. He is a devotee of the tarot, and has been working with White Tara, the green dragon of peace and healing, and Brigid. In the past couple of years, he has been spinning and knitting magic.

For more information, please use our instructor contact forms to send an email to either Birch or Wren.

Spellworking Class, November 19th – RSVP Now!

1 WITCH.  Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d.
2 WITCH. Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin’d.
3 WITCH. Harpier cries:—’tis time! ’tis time!
1 WITCH. Round about the caldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.—
Toad, that under cold stone,
Days and nights has thirty-one;
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot!
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
-from Shakespeare’s Macbeth

The Power of the Witch’s Spell
Are you looking for a new job? A partner? Wealth? Love? The art of spellcrafting has long been associated with the power of the witch. This day-long workshop will help all the participants tap into the power of building a spell. Opening to the energies of our spirit allies, they will guide us in crafting the intent and clarifying its purpose. We will review important ethical considerations when working with spells for ourselves and others. Depending on the energy of the group, we may or may not release the spell during this day. However, we will prepare for releasing the spell into all the realms, including the power of binding the spell.

Birch will be facilitating this workshop at his home from 9am-3:30pm on Saturday, November 19, 2011. There is no charge for this particular workshop. Please come well fed and bring a snack or two and your water bottle. We will break for about an hour for lunch. Birch will offer a big pot of soup, so things that compliment that brewing cauldron would be appreciated.

Birch is a queer Reclaiming Initiate who has been teaching/priesting in the tradition for over ten years. He has taught at Reclaiming witchcamps up and down the east coast, and other Reclaiming classes throughout the southeast and at his home in North Carolina. His current work focuses on the magic of the sacred grove. That place where the green world surrounds us with wealth, love, lore and tradition; a place where all magic and the connection to the many realms begins. The grove opens us as humans to the realms of the stones, plants, animals, fae, and the divine. These realms are one within the sacred grove and these realms acting as one are vital in supporting the life force that runs throughout.

Please RSVP by November 10, 2011.  The class size will be limited to 6 people and Birch will be providing some important information (ie., homework) prior to the day long retreat. The sooner you RSVP, the better, as Birch will be sending the first information out around Samhain.

Oh! Don’t worry, there will be no entrails thrown into the cauldron.

It’s elemental . . . with the art of magic, we deepen our vision and focus our will, empowering ourselves to act in the world. In this experiential course we develop the practice of Magic, Witchcraft, and Earth-based spirituality by working with the Elements of Magic: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit, in the tradition established by Starhawk and the Reclaiming Collective.

Witchcraft is a growing tradition in our culture today. It is a call from and to the ancient Goddess and her immanence. While we live in cultures of domination and control, worlds full of desire, beauty, love and grace surround us and the Craft opens them to us.

Reclaiming is an ever-evolving tradition of Witchcraft that is rooted in eco-feminism and the Anderson Feri Tradition. It is dedicated to personal empowerment, teaching and unifying spirit and politics. Learn more at http://www.reclaiming.org.

About the Teachers:

Wren

Wren is a supposedly rational scientist who rediscovered and reclaimed her magical side in 1999, and happily found a spiritual home in the Reclaiming tradition. She has attended nine Spiralheart witchcamps and innumerable Reclaiming-related courses and workshops, has taught several Elements of Magic classes and other Reclaiming courses, is active in the local Reclaiming group Dragon’s Cauldron, and continues study, daily practice and teaching based on Reclaiming and Anderson Feri traditions.

A grandmother, botanist, singer, logophile, and member of an intentional community, Wren likes to commune with the green realm and the beings of the forest, explore off the beaten path, create places where Mystery can enter on her land and in her home, and do magic with fellow Witches.

Jennifer

When the Green Dragon winked at Jennifer and let her catch his tail as she danced her way through the early 1990’s, he sparked a pursuit of mystery that in 2003 led her to study in the Reclaiming tradition.  Since then she has taken several key Reclaiming courses and become an active and proud witch with the local Dragon’ s Cauldron.  This is her second time teaching Elements and she looks forward to sharing in the experience as both student and teacher.

A strong believer that if you play with the Universe it will play back, Jennifer approaches magic as a co-creator, with a child’ s sense of wonder, joy and boldness, and a deep passion for magical work as an internal and external healing force.  Of late she has left the marketplace to action the liberty of weaving magic into her home, garden and the raising of two young sons.
